Brighton Boulevard as part of the transformation of the River North Art District (RiNo) was designed to provide public right-of-way improvements including travel and turn lanes, curbs and medians, protected bike lanes, pedestrian amenities as well as a number of utility/drainage improvements between 29th Street and 44th Street. Western States was tasked to install all landscaping, irrigation and drainage improvements along the project corridor. A unique feature of this project was the use of an innovative product known as Silva Cells. These cells are a modular suspended pavement system that uses soil volumes to support large tree growth and provide powerful on-site stormwater management through absorption and interception in small urban spaces. Silva Cells are able to sustain large trees, are low maintenance, can be used in any type of soil, and help sustain flow control of stormwater.
